Eurax Hc is a cream used to relieve itching and inflammation in a range of skin conditions, including eczema, dermatitis, and Insect bite reactions.  It contains a combination of active ingredients in crotamiton and hydrocortisone.

It is suitable for adults and children over ten. The usual recommended dosage is to apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area twice a day for a maximum duration of seven days.

Doctor’s advice

How does Eurax Hc work?

Despite knowing their therapeutic benefits, it is not always clear how some medications work. This is the case for crotamiton, which is included in Eurax Hc cream to provide relief from itching, but its mechanism of action is not well understood.

Hydrocortisone is a type of medicine known as a steroid (corticosteroid). Steroids are not the same as anabolic steroids. Hydrocortisone is included in Eurax Hc cream to relieve inflammation. It works by stopping the release of substances that cause inflammation. By applying hydrocortisone directly to inflamed skin, the aim is to reduce inflammation in that area using the least amount of steroid possible.

Who should not use Eurax Hc?

As always, do not use the medication if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it. Eurax Hc cream should not be used on children under ten (unless recommended by their doctor). You should speak with your doctor before using Eurax Hc cream if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Eurax Hc cream should not be used on any open, infected, or acne-covered skin or on any sensitive areas of the body, such as the face or genital area.

Eurax Hc cream is flammable, so you should avoid smoking or going near naked flames when using the product.

Are there any side effects?

As with all medications, some people may experience side effects. Potential side effects from Eurax Hc cream can include feeling a burning sensation on the skin when the cream is first applied. However, this sensation tends to disappear after a few days of applying.

Occasionally some people may have an allergic reaction to the medication. You should stop using the cream and seek urgent medical advice if you develop any symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as a skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, tongue, or throat. You should also stop using the cream and seek urgent medical attention if you develop any problems with your eyes, such as blurred vision.

How do I apply Eurax Hc?

Wash and dry your hands and then squeeze out the amount of cream required. It is recommended to use a pea-sized amount for a palm-sized surface area. Spread the cream in a thin layer over the affected area. Carefully smooth it into your skin in the direction the hair grows until it disappears. Make sure you do not cover the area with airtight dressings as this can increase absorption of the medication into your body, leading to an increased risk of developing side effects. Wash your hands afterwards (unless you are treating the skin on your hands).
